Highlights for 2015
It's looking quiet enough so far in 2015. The Juliana Hatfield Three have reunited and are releasing the follow up to 1993's Become What You Are on 17th Feb and based on the first track to emerge If I Could, it will be a summery janglefest. Dakota Suite are collaborating with Quentin Sirjacq for The Indestructibility of the Already Felled which should appear early in 2015. If it's noise you're looking for there's a choice between A Place To Bury Strangers' fourth album Transfixiation, out 17th Feb or The Soft Moon's third album Deeper, out 31st March.
Scott Weiland is recording a rock album with The Wildabouts. Entitled Blaster, it should be out in March. Elsewhere, Richmond Fontaine and And So I Watch You From Afar have new albums expected. On the more outlandish scale of the spectrum, Mark Kozelek is working with industrial band Godflesh, and maybe My Bloody Valentine will release an EP??

Lengthy, bombastic instrumental rock.

Exciting new Irish band.
7. Mark Lanegan Band - Phantom Radio
Lanegan keeps pushing the boundaries of his sound.
6. Morrissey - World Peace Is None Of Your Business
Old misery guts finally decides to mix things up... a bit.
5. Ryan Adams - Ryan Adams
Almost too smooth at times, yet it really works at others.
4. Dakota Suite and Quentin Sirjacq - There Is Calm To Be Done
Chris Hooson and co continue to turn out flawless albums.
3. Mogwai - Rave Tapes
One of the most consistent bands around.
2. Bob Mould - Beauty & Ruin
An unexpected late career highlight, the fire still burns.

Looking forward to 2014
First out of the blocks will be Mogwai with Rave Tapes, which will be released on Jan 20th. Based on Remurdered, the track released off it so far it's going to be electronic in feel, in a similar vein to their Les Revenants soundtrack.
Mark Kozelek is releasing his first album in, oh, at least five months, this time as Sun Kil Moon. It's entitled Benji and I really hope that's better than it sounds. Based on the acoustic tracks released to date it's up to scratch but not as strong as his last 2 albums. It's due out Feb 11th. In November he is, believe it or not, releasing Mark Kozelek sings Christmas Carols about which I am stunned into silence.
Beck is releasing what for him sounds like a fairly conventional album: Morning Phase on Jan 20th. Apparently it's a follow up of sorts to his downbeat, song-based Sea Change. Bill Callahan is releasing a dub version of Dream River on Jan 21st - Have Fun With God, and presumably God knows what THAT will sound like.
Dakota Suite have been recording with Quentin Sirjacq and have an album, There Is Calm To Be Done due for release in June. Fraser McGowan will most likely release a song-based album as Caught In The Wake Forever some time in 2014. Willy Vlautin's fourth novel The Free is due out in February and at some point his soundtrack to The Fighting Heart may surface.
I neglected to mention the Mark Lanegan Anthology - Has God Seen My Shadow? which is coming out in early January and will have unreleased material on it.

sounds like nothing special at first, but it’s quite an addictive collection of
songs, from the most enjoyable whiner in music today.
4 Neil Young
& Crazy Horse – Psychedelic Pill
In Driftin’
Back this album has one of the tracks of the year and definitely the longest.
3 Mark Lanegan
Band – Blues Funeral
A strong
collection of songs from the uber-serious Lanegan.
2 Caught In
The Wake Forever – Against A Simple Wooden Cross
Not an easy
listen. But what an album. Debut album of the year.
1 The Twilight
Sad – No One Can Ever Know
This should
have been a wrong move, but the electronic-tinged material is brilliantly
cold. Now if they could just find
directions to Ireland…
